Don’t you hate it when, after you’ve spent a hefty sum for a beauty product such as skincare, makeup or hair care, you end up with pimples, rashes, or hair loss just because you’re having a reaction/are allergic to some of the ingredients? You’ve not only lost money in the process but also need to fork out some more to buy a remedy! Wouldn’t it be great if you could try out a product first before buying one?
Well, you can, actually, through beauty samples.
What are beauty samples?
Beauty samples are miniature sizes or small portions of beauty products that can be bought at a very nominal cost or even given for free. Beauty samples are the best way to try out a product before purchasing the normal sized item. I’m not an adventurous person, but I find that the benefits from using beauty samples are huge as there are no better way to discover better products than to learn about them and try them out.
Aside from the occasional beauty samples given away at locations, I get my beauty samples through magazines, coupons and websites. Websites such as Malaysia Freebies.com, Freebies Land Malaysia, Only Beauty and I Love Freebies Malaysia often provide links to product websites where you can choose and request samples to be delivered to your doorstep at absolutely no cost. Sometimes, they provide information about specialized trial samples : just visit the stated counter/store where you will get a complimentary skin-analysis and then given suitable free samples that you can try for 3 – 7 days.
But my favourite method of getting samples at reasonable prices is by buying beauty boxes from Bag of Love and ModBox. Occasionally, the samples I received were huge!
Modbox Blogger Kit
I have previously written about my experience with beauty box or ‘kotak kecantikan’, Bag of Love and ModBox. My personal experience was so satisfying that I ended up being a user of Human Nature’s Overnight Elixir after using a sample from The Bag of Love, and I bought it and other items at Modbox’s online shop, Modshop.
Naturally, as a fan of beauty boxes, I was very delighted when Jess from the Modbox Crew asked me whether I would like to sample the Modbox Blogger Kit – absolutely, of course!
It arrived in a very familiar box.
These are the items that I received around the third week of last November:
- Oriks BB Premium Cleansing Gel – 2 x 2.5ml packets (RM48/100ml)
- Rescare Aqua Peeling Body Exfoliating Spray – FULL-SIZED (300ml – RM75)
- Earth Care Goaty Melons Organic Handmade Bodysoap (Goat’s Milk & Honeydew) – 60-80g, which to me looks FULL-SIZED (RM14-RM16/60-80g)
- Miacare Acne Defence Concealer Stick – FULL-SIZED (1.2g : RM24.90)
- OxyAqua Gel Cream – 5ml (RM150/30ml)
- Dermacol Botocell Intensive Lifting Cream – 2 x 2g packets (RM127.50/50ml)
- Reiscare.my Talk-Free Rice Baby Powder – 1 x 3.3g sample packet each of Extra Mild and Floral Sweet (RM6.90/50g)
I have used both packets of the Oriks BB Premium Cleansing Gel, have used Rescare Aqua Peeling Body Exfoliating Spray a few times and have just started applying OxyAqua Gel Cream and trying out Miacare Acne Defence Concealer Stick.
Oriks BB Premium Cleansing Gel
Oriks BB Premium Cleansing Gel is a Korean product , which is formulated with aloe vera to soothe and hydrate the skin. The info on the packet is neither written in English nor Bahasa, and even Modshop doesn’t provide much information regarding its ingredients, therefore I had to google for the product ingredients. This is part of the info that I was able to glean from its Malaysian website.
According to the info provided in the beauty box , Oriks BB Premium Cleansing Gel is stated as ‘Enriched with aloe vera to soothe and hydrate the skin, it deeply cleanses to remove oil, dirt and light makeup, without leaving your skin feeling tight and dry.’
While I can’t confirm that it is made mainly with botanical or natural ingredients, upon application on my damp face, I find that it doesn’t lather at all, much like organic or natural cleansing gel, and doesn’t make my skin feel tight or dry. The liquid really does feel like a slightly-watered aloe vera gel. I suppose it doesn’t contain surfactants (chemicals that give sudsy consistency to cleansing products such as facial cleanser, shampoo, laundry detergent, etc), hence no foaming, which is good.
After 3 applications, I noticed my skin looking more radiant. For heavy makeup, I use my makeup remover first before cleansing my entire face with Oriks BB Premium Cleansing Gel. And I also tried it on my son’s face after he has given up on the stubborn face-paint residue that just wouldn’t wash off after repeated cleansing using water, his facial cleanser and an ordinary soap.
Notice the ‘scar’ on his cheek?
I applied a generous amount of Oriks gel on the stubborn stain, gently rubbed it, and in about 15 seconds, I could see the paint getting loose and after washing, this is the result:
All cleaned! 😀
Miacare Acne Defence Concealer Stick
As for Miacare Acne Defence Concealer Stick, the rotating pen is a convenient way to conceal blemish/acne without clogging pores, while at the same time treating acne (reducing redness and inflammation). It’s ingredients are mostly rated 0-1, with only a few rated 4 and 5 (salicylic acid, triethanolamine and fragrance) at Skindeep, which is quite an accomplishment considering the fact that it is a treatment pen and reasonably priced.
Here are the ingredient list on the packaging:
And an explanation on what it does:
I applied it today on a pimple that appeared on my forehead yesterday, just below the hairline, and after 8 hours, the pimple is still present. I also applied it on my son’s red pimple:
When applied onto the pimple, it conceals the redness:
After some rubbing and blending:
Miacare Acne Defence Concealer Stick doesn’t conceal the pimple ‘bump’, but it does lighten the redness, thus making it almost invisible unless scrutinized. It probably doesn’t work as well as Miacare Acne Patch, but the Acne Patch only really becomes ‘invisible‘ under makeup or foundation, whereas Concealer Stick is supposed to be applied after makeup and sunscreen and as seen on the photo above, can also be applied without makeup. Therefore, the Concealer Stick is suitable for male and can easily be applied anywhere, anytime.
As evident from my experience, samples really do help a lot to decide which product fits our lifestyle, our individual skin type, our needs and concerns, etc.
