Adui….My Netflix Account was Hacked! I was so surprised and nearly went berserk. I interrogated the kids a couple of times, asked them whether they made the changes or whether they have shared the account with anyone else. Each one of them stuck to their story. Hubby pleaded innocence because he doesn’t watch Netflix – I believe him because his jam is iflix and others.
The Chain of Events
It happened on Thursday. I received an email from Netflix. It was a notification that my password was updated.
I thought the kids may have done it, accidentally. I planned to ask hubby and the kids at home after buka puasa. Then, I totally forgot about it. Only when I can’t access the account this evening (Saturday), that I remembered the email. It seems that 2 other emails arrived in my inbox, but I didn’t notice as I was too busy at work.
The second email was a notification about change of email address.
The last email was significant because it meant that I couldn’t contact Netflix as a registered user. I also couldn’t change the password nor access the account.
Wow, the hacker even had the gall to upgrade to ‘Premium’ account, RM51 per month when I only recently upgraded to 2-screen account at RM42. Anyway, since it’s established that the kids weren’t responsible, I immediately contacted Netflix.
Netflix Customer Service
Fortunately, the Netflix customer service was available. I had to send 2 enquiries to get a response, about 10 minutes later. Not bad. The delay could be because at first, I tried to chat as a user which was impossible as I couldn’t login.
I had a bit of a conundrum when the Netflix customer service asked for my method of payment which meant divulging my credit card number. I had to think really hard about sharing that info. Then I decided to proceed. Luckily, she didn’t ask for my cvc number nor the expiry date on the card. If she did, I would rather cancel my Netflix account.
Then, I received a few emails from Netflix informing me that my email address has been changed, telling me to reset my password, etc. It all happened pretty fast. Within minutes, I could access my account again.
Once I was in, I saw these profiles.
I got curious and took the opportunity to check out my account streaming activities.
From Spain?!! Aiyo…omputih ni, akaun Netflix pun kamu minat hack…??!
Hacking of Netflix Account is Easy and Rampant
Apparently, this sort of incident happens quite frequently. It was reported in Business Insider that :
Netflix users should read the piece. It’s really interesting.
